VLANs

(Context: Medium/Large routed/switched computer networks)

I just feel deep down that VLANs could be done much better! Maybe I don't understand the whys of it all! I still think that subnetting could be done better too!

VLANS and subnetting are great. The way most muppets imprelement them isn't.

I'm just glad that largely I don't need to bother with VLANs - they're not normally an issue when you're basically a backbone fat-pipe-provider. LANs in general suck [I could never get my head round spanning-tree] - what they do they don't do well but I'm surprised that they do it at all.

Subnetting can be fun - though I'm more into supernetting [aggregating a block of adjacent /24 assignments together and treating them as a single entity as far as routing is concerned].

What gets really fun is Variable Length subnet-masking, with different bits of the variably-subnetted network scattered over the globe... my current BGP4 routing-table is pushing 120Mbytes when fully stable. Ouch!
