The politics of war and fear....
|
In the event of us discovering intelligent alien life, unless the aliens knew something about us already they would be very stupid to start a war. For one thing, even if they did want to occupy us, they would first have to know whether our planet was inhabitable to them. Our atmosphere, or gravity, or the number of viruses we have could easily wipe them out if their environment is very different. Furthermore, such a long and hazardous journey across space made in complete ignorance about our planet could turn out to be fruitless and a waste of time for them. Secondly, if our planet was conducive to their particular life-form, to risk destroying it with giant weapons would be equally stupid since that could well make it uninhabitable for them. I hope that an intelligent race of beings would be able to think through all these pros and cons before conducting an invasion. If they can't it's probably not worth contacting them anyway.
