I want to create a single, very simple website (with one graphic, and one page)... where can I get this done really cheap? I don't trust things like "cheapdomains.com"... anyone got any advice?
I just want a single domain (I have one in mind.com), it will have a single picture, way under 100k, and a single webpage containing some links and text. That's it... the bandwidth usage will be pretty small.
I will update it infrequently; I'll need some web-based uploading or FTP if possible... although I could do it by emailing attachments to you if need be!
Is this your own server? I only really make long-term plans so I'm interested in how stable this setup will be!
Thanks for the offer, I'm more than happy to take it up! And I trust you, which helps :-)
The setup is a intel based linux server, running apache2 with associated bits of software that go along with that. Can host your web pages, and host dns if you need that. FTP is there, though something like SFTP would be preferable.. failing that, I can organise a web-based uploader for you (though don't have anything set up for that at the moment)
The machine is sitting in a datacenter in Brisbane. Co-owned by me, and a bloke who works for the datacenter. Its pretty reliable network wise. Occasionally has hardware problems, and might be down for a day or so while a new part gets delivered, and the machine gets fixed. This happens about once a year. The actual data will be on RAIDed disks, so its unlikely a disk fault will make it go away.. though there has been an occasion when the other guy accidentally deleted everything, and had fucked up the backup tapes.. so not 100% guaranteed :-S This is not likely to be repeated in the near future :-)
OK. I don't know what SFTP is... how do you upload your files? If its ok, I could just sent you a copy of the site. It won't change often.
I'm pleased with the Datacenter setup, it seems cool.
If it works out... then I may well want another 10 little domains to go with this one. I don't know what deal/finance you two have got sorted, but if I'm thinking about 10 sites then I'd need to start paying... I guess... I'm too remote from the online world to be able to properly manage new domains and such on my own.
For domain names I use inexpensivedomains.com. As for hosting, Tippus Tailus gave me some ages back. Doesn't charge anything, but has some restrictions. No PHP or similar (but it is running on a 486). Lots of filetypes are carpet-banned. No capital letters. That sort of thing. Hasn't effected my simple static sites yet, but it's kinda put a crimp in getting a wiki set up.
