If you aren't any of the criticizms that you pointed your finger at why do you need to unite with other people and call yourself a Satanist? You're just as needy for a crutch to give meaning to your life as some of the people you criticized. Otherwise you wouldn't need to affiliate with other people and call yourself something as ridiculous as a Satanist. I am agree with the philosphy, but I consider myself more of an atheist, maybe a litte agnostic. I feel silly calling myself a "Satanist", and I don't feel the need to unite with any organization to back up my beliefs or lack of.

Satanism - A critique

I can see your point in your article, there are alot of people out there who are just wannabees who want to act satanic so that people can think they are pretty cool. But, you also have to consider that what you said is irrelavent to real Satanist because of the fact that they know the real stuff. Take for example High Priest Peter Gilmore, Magister, Magus, IVº, he knows what he's talking about and he is a real satanist, like most of the people in the higher ranks and degrees at the Church of Satan. In some of his last interviews, Dr. Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan said that he admits he was short-sighted on one or two of his ideas and if he didn't die, I'm sure we would have had a follow-up Satanic Bible. As for the part of Satanists judging people, people need to be judged in order for them to become more evolved, take for instance this, if Martin Luther King (Who was Christian, but he had good ideas on the state of the world) didn't start talking about how shit things were, and nobody stood up against the oppression that happened to black people at the time, there would still be slavery today, or they would only now try to stop it!

Very good critique, it says alot of things that i think but do not have the mental agility to put into words or describe to other people. All in all i think modern Satanism is in a bit of a state, what with all the fashionables hijacking it. dms21.

	I really liked your article.

Though I am a Christian. It really had some good information in it as to why people portray themselves as Satanists. I don't go around bashing Satanists or any other religious groups... Just the ones who "pretend" for some type of image for acceptance even though they are "independent". Btw. Would you think it to be wierd for a Christian to listen to Heavy and Death Metal?

My own response after reading Satanism- A Critique

I recently de-converted from this so-called "religion" for many reasons that played a big influence in my life. In my years of studying Modern Satanism, all the while I had felt that it just was not sufficient... and this was not because of what 'they' say, "Well, Satanism isn't for everyone." Satanism is for no one. Through the years of struggling to deal with the rest of these so-called Modern Satanists, which I found to be nothing more than a closed-minded, dogmatic, stupid, and highly judgmental bunch, I realized that this 'Modern Satanism', established by Anton LaVey (or whatever he called himself) was a time-limited, idiotic, angry, and insufficient "religion". Its principles and philosophy revolves around a limited amount of learning resources, and basically teaches one to become a closed-minded idiot by shunning all other materials (books) that do not have to do with LAVEY'S interests and rules, as well as anything that mentions the word GOD, or SPIRIT, regardless of its actual meaning.
Another thing about Satanism is that its founder was not as brilliant and educated as many think. Had he been, he wouldn't have started the damn ranting in the first place. It is obvious that this man had not studied or read anything beyond his little cage of beliefs, doing just what his "followers" do today- disregarding anything having to do with spiritual practices, indigenous cultures, meditation, or the like. It is as if the Satanists are following down the same blind, closed-minded and basically IGNORANT path he had been on, and died on.
Another thing is that its beliefs are all erroneous, anyways. Taught by an ignorant and uneducated man, I wouldn't expect them not to be. But when you have a limited amount of reading material... you have to learn what you can, before you run out of satisfying books lacking certain words and phrases of spiritual meanings.
It was obvious that LaVey never stopped to consider what WESTERN civilization has done to "human nature"! What he called "human nature" was not nature at all- only the perverted mutation of our industrial, mechanical, out-of-touch society. No, man is NOT naturally what he says they are.
Hey, LaVey said it himself- "I own books I do not read...." (Satan Speaks).
Modern Satanism is but a useless, ignorant, angry religion established by a conservative, dirty and selfish man with a grudge and a special attraction to the dark side.

I just read "Satanism - a critique" and I laughed out loud! I am only 16 and sort of mingle with the goth crowd: the "claim to satanism" list was like reading thier minds! I saw myself in that list too, although I am not a satanist, I am of no fixed religion and I'm sort of searching for a belief system I can wilfully contribute to. Your article has made me realise that I can't find happiness in ANY religion, because all religions will have rules and regulations that I won't agree with. From now on, I create the religion of Lorie Fisher. Come join!

your a hypocrite, you wont join any religon de to the rules and regulations yet you want people to join your religion so that they have to suffer under your rules and regulation. and there is always rules and regultaions due to the law of your country.

Satan?

1) Reading the Satanic Bible does not make you a Satanist; knowing everything about The Occult, or the Prince of Darkness, or All about religions and pseudoscientific theories and mitts, does not mean happiness, power and control, it MEANS NOTHING!, Satanism is not for everyone, Satan is a Personal Superior God, that had no interest on the weak and close-minded Souls that Believe in the False God…

2) Satan works 1 on 1,not true others Believes, and he decide what you are ready to handle,(responsibility to the responsible); We are no one to demand from Him.

3) Everyone is unique and as a unique being, we all have our ways to do things differently, NO ONE can tell you what to believe, it is that unique Commitment and devotion to Him, that will open your eyes to the greater knowledge.

4) Satanism means the sacrifice, devotion and commitment of ourselves to the Real God.

So the guy who wrote this article is critical of satanist "posers" (my own words). He gives a list of different kinds.
Which catigory does he fall into himself?
Anton Lavey-style Satanists are posers by definition. If someone calls themself a satanist but doesn't believe in a Satan then they are pretending and want attention for it. Using satan as a symbol doesn't mean shit because if you announce yourself as a satanist people think of a real satan. It's like those posters that say SEX in big letters and then say below "now that I have your attention, buy a coke".
