VNV Nation: Judgement and stuff
VNV Nations' new CD is his best yet, it is truly awesomely brilliant, exciting and all those types of things. It's still futurepop rather than the EBM that VNV started out as. It's a dark, brooding and yet pounding masterpiece.

Likewise, Assemblage 23's new album is also pretty good.

(Er, I've been to Resurrection Records... it's been ages since I got some CDs)

Also I picked up a Icon of Coil remix CD, which is on-average better than their (sometimes badly judged) albums.

I've also picked up (but not listened to) a Combichrist CD, and (more riskily) an Ayria CD because I liked "Horrible Dream" that I have on a compilation.

I've finished reading Prof. Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene (1976)... and well, it was so amazingly good that I'm going to have to write out my thoughts when calm, relaxed and objective. He is my greatest hero.

Survived the heat wave?
It was wonderful, I came back to Germany from Afghanistan for 2 weeks R&R, and found that Germany was basically the same temp. as Kabul! Although, Mazaar-e-Sherif is still hotter than both.

At least there were breezes in Germany, too... altogether, the weahter made me happy :-) sun sun sun!

And that meant that everyone at Ampifest (2-day alternative industrial and rock festival, inc. VNV Nation) were superbly scantily dressed. We stayed in a hotel in Koln for 3 days, but didn't get any photos at all.

I went swimming a few times, which was great. Went to a BBQ.

I haven't been online because a lightning strike broke my network card, made the router smoke, melted the DSL line splitter and has caused a line fault meaning that there is no digital connection even though the phone (somehow) still works. They're working on the line.

Oh, and gave massive fusses to my two beautiful and character-ful kittens!

I've been working through (post-spam-filter) 300 emails or so from the past 2 weeks.

I hope you've all been enjoying the summer :-)

"Matter + Form" by VNV Nation
VNV Nation's new album, Matter + Form, has really grown on me... at first I didn't like the idea that it would!

It's a comprehensively mature, well-rounded album. It's hardly EBM though, it's mature electric dance, IDM, not EBM! It feels as if, however, some of the dancey bits only fit in unnaturally. Anyway, VNV Nation have always had inspiring lyrics, depth through a mixture of obscurity and concept-dropping, combined with a worldly emotional commentary... but this album is less pretentious, more down to Earth yet than Airships and Carbon from their last album, but musically not so high or melodramatic as those eipc dramas. It's a little chilled out, beside angst, not above it and certainly not revelling in it, goth style.

It's music for goth parents, not for neophytes. I couldn't for the life of me identify what demographics albums like this attract... it's like the 80s would have been if things were happy and deep more than shallow, hopefull and desperate.

Dusseldorf
Went shopping... went out early, a mental, loud, obnoxious, rude, vulgar, energetic, permanently drunk guy called Sean drove another four to Dusseldorf. Keith and I were on the search for USB extension cables and a basic HUB (cat 5 style). Which we got... now, using our funky wireless arial that we've selotaped to the side of the building, we can get intermittent Internet access on our 2-computer network. Which makes me a very, very happy bunny.

Anyway... we split up, three of us went to a large multistorey indoor shopping center. The top three floors were devoted to technology, music, etc. We got computer kit there. I picked up a nifty 256MB USB drive for €15 (£10), which I think I've lost. I also found a large corner devoted to music, including lots of alternative stuff.

I bought:

Sisters of Mercy - Vision Thing. The only Sisters CD that I didn't have but have been meaning to buy forever. With this one, I can now (FINALLY!) give away the "Best of" CD to someone unsuspecting as I don't need it anymore.

Tristania's new album, Ashes, which rocks in choral, dramatic, gothic metal glory. My second Tristania CD.

VNV Nation's new CD, Matter & Form.

Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth

E Nomine - Die Prophezeiung

Delerium - Karma
Delerium - Semantic Spaces

Haven't listened to most of them... I have a year's backlog of partially looked at emails, and a million other things to do.

Duseldorf is a good city, polite, clean, simple, etc... in short, it's not British! Nothing beats London, my beloved spiritual home, but London is not polite, clean or simple.

Slimelight was good! And Sunday was expensive!
I left my house on my own ([info]iakat left 2hrs ahead of me to meet [info]mattlazycat) at 9.30... and arrived at 10.30 at Slimelight. Enough time to get some drinks during Gloomy Hour! 2 for the price of one.

So I started out by drinking 3 Watermelon flavored Bicardi Breezers and a Lime flavored alcopop (the precise variety escapes me). Then I was ready to start dancing! And dance I did....
