Put-on nonconformity is Satanisms' greatest weakness

Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, was an infamous critical thinker. One of his own criticisms of Satanism was that of insincere concocted nonconformity:

“A person devoid of special ability must work harder to become "special," which often results in an abrasive pretense of infallibility. Combine the overachiever's pseudo-specialty with his hauteur of infallibility, and all that's lacking to complete the profile of contemporary "cool" is freeze-dried noncomformity. If noncomformity is Satanism's strength, planned or put-on nonconformity is its greatest weakness. The predictable antics of heavy-handed "Satanists" are quite profitably exploited by non-Satanists”
"The Devil's Notebook" by Anton LaVey, p64.

This quote has been added to the index page of my "Criticisms of Satanism" subsite on www.dpjs.co.uk/criticism.

That is a very good quote. I'm sure you are aware from at least two other scenes you are associated with that Satanisum is not the only scenes to suffer from this.

I'm trying to remeber how I used to put it. I used to use the word Rebel but the meaning is close to the same thing. A rebel is defined by what he is against. If he is against everything then he must be nothing. I think What is missed at that time was how remarkably stupid it is to claim to be a rebel when it leaves you open to have what you are defined by everyone else.

If we use non-conformist to have a slightly different meaning; That of not comforming to the norm just because it is the norm but being ones self and not concerned at weather or not any part of ones life paralels the norm or not; I think we would have something far more healthy than the Rebel for the sake of rebelion model.

Sorry about your browser, I really don't know where to start in looking for a potential cause!

LaVey has moments where he reaches Nietzsche-quality levels of critical analysis.

Yeah, got a Christmas tree[1] with chocolates and lights on it!

[1] A black one!

I've removed the massive list of 'tags' from the left-hand component of my LJ... that's a partial suspect as to what might cause a browser to freeze. (I.e., it has to load quite a long list and float it).
