Souls do not Exist

"Souls do not Exist: Evidence from Science & Philosophy Against Mind-Body Dualism" by Vexen Crabtree (2007, rewritten from my 1998 original).

Our 'minds', 'souls', 'spirit' and consciousness are all physical in nature. Thousands of years of research has shown that our brains comprise and produce our true selves. Souls and spirits do not exist. Our bodies run themselves. We know from cases of brain damage and the effects of psychoactive drugs, that our experiences are caused by physical chemistry acting on our physical neurones in our brains. Our innermost selves is our biochemical selves.

This poses an interesting question on Ghosts. I doubt that "Ghosts" or "spirit people" are some sort of sentient beings, somehow left over from the physical body on death.

Are ghosts more the electrical energy leaving our bodies on death, leaving being an imprint on our surroundings?

That type of explanation is quite common (it was once my Dad's pet theory too), but, neurologists and physicists seriously doubt that it is possible: the electromagnetic fields around our heads only last 1mm into open air before they are destroyed by the chaotic distortions of normal atmospheric ions and natural magnetic fields. To sustain such patterns in such quantity that they continue to convey information about a specific person, and to make those patterns persist, requires actual computing power and signal regeneration and there is no known mechanism by which such an effect could occur naturally.

I know it's far fetched, but pottery can hold electronic imprints for centuries, though it is quite rare, so why not stone?
Also, there are still so many things we don't know. I'm not a total "believer" in ghosts. But I'm open to the idea that some scientific reason will be found that explains them other than psychosomatic experiences.

A whole shed of pottery might hold the same quantity of magnetic information as a barcode, like a book's ISBN number, but, I suspect that the amount of information required to generate a ghost or an image, perhaps reflected via water droplets in the air containing dissolved metals, is somewhat greater. A projected .jpg would need 20000 bytes of information minimum, meaning 160 000 individual bits of information; and that's encoded, requiring decryption by a computer. I find it quite unfathomable how, even if pottery, walls and paint in a house could store enough information, how it could ever be interpreted naturally by a brain (something which is very INsensitive to outside magnetic fields).

Anyway... I'm not arguing against your open mind of course, it's just that I've read a fair amount about ghosts, and not many people believe there is a viable method for the creation.

(Er, that was me)

Well, I'm not exactly trying to argue for the existence of Ghosts. Just really giving my 2p's worth. I'm open to other research, due to the fact that sometimes Science proves science wrong. So we are not always 100% sure of something

I completely agree, it's always worth pursuing what-ifs, and checking things out just in case!

To be honest, I wish ghosts did exist, as they are an interest of mine. Secondly, I want to come back as a ghost when I die just to abuse Yvette Fielding :D

THAT'S NOT ENTIRELY TRUE! WHEN EVERYBODY DIES, THEIR "SOULS" COMES DOWN BY ME IN HELL FOR ETERNITY!

So why bother with this? What does it matter if we are all sinues and sin...I have no answers. Pergaps there are none. We are all shit in the truest sense of the word....human fertiliser and food for an unknown life force, which like our own needs to eat. We come from mud and return to mud Maybe we are all breakfast, lunch and dinner for something else? I feel therefore I am...pain and joy being opposite sides of the coin....we live in a world of opposites and reconciling this creates our pain and our mystery...The world, life and God are too big to comprehend and some find madness in their search for meaning...without this we are meaningless. Why do we cry? Perhaps our emotions are food too? If there is a wheel of karma. Next time I want to get off the ride? Today the world is empty and meaningless. Maybe tomorrow will be different.Yes we are all shits in our own ways..what would be the opposite? My love is lost ...I am lost in a world of confusion..darkness and fear of being utterly alone...so I'm reaching out for meaning...I'm reaching out to you.Maybe souls exist.who knows? Sometimes I wish I wasn't a human being who feels so intensly and thinks so deeply...I am what and who I am...a cell in this body of a universe...Peace and joy to all those who feel like shit...Maybe tomorrow will change everything.I live in hope..It's all relative...if I fell in love tomorrow the world would be perfect..so many questions..we need our masks to hide the terror and lies in our hearts..madness is perhaps the expression of seeing life as it truly is...or seeing ourselves as we truly are? Simple pleasures in life..a roof over my head..food on the table...and love in my heart and home..God and the devil are merely constructs we make up to make sense of the senseless..who knows why we are here..simply to live and die in great numbers...who cares? I do xxxx

Wisdom

(Anonymous)
You need to read Ecclesiastes in the Bible. He had it all: wisdom, abundance of food, drink, etc. a kingdom, MANY women, power, beautiful and palacious homes, etc., but in the end he came to this conclusion:

Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.
