The things that matter are the things that last

Steering something in the right direction early on will prevent things going as wrong in the future.

Research into solving long-term problems will turn out to (later) solve more-short term problems than merely thinking about short-term problems now.

Etc.

If it won't matter in 100 years when everyone now is dead, then, don't worry about it so much...

Oooh, a challenging one.

Yes and no. Grudges and the like are often to minor to worry about, but at the same time if it's a real biggy and keep going for generations.

Same with environmental issues. Who cares if that nuclear reactor is shut down in 25 years etc etc? Well, that's the site useless for the next 15000 then... Power is much more important than petty grudges over words. Without power society collapses. Having said that, without power society has to get off it's arse and do something... Hmm...

Trouble is if you don't look after the libraries then.... and without those in 100 years you'll be fucked. Unless you don't want your kids to benefit of course.

I'm not quite sure how you're supposed to ignore the future. The here and now is obviously very important, but so is the past as you learn from it to shape a better future. If in the here and now of olde they didn't bother there'd be nothing to learn from and you'd get a Planet of the Apes type thang. I'm thinking cats will take over personally. They know the score.
