The Biblical Book of Joshua in the Old Testament: The Genocide of the Canaanites

The divine order of genocide is carried out against the native Canaanites by Joshua's forces; the whole region is conquered. The 6th book in the Old Testament is historically untrue, and morally dubious

  1. A Dubious History
    1. The Egyptians Didn't Notice
    2. The Cities Were Not Populated Yet and Were Not Destroyed
    3. If the Conquest Never Happened, Where Did the Israelites Come From?
    4. The Book of Joshua Was Written in the 7th Century BCE
  2. A Very Problematic Morality
  3. The 24 chapters of Joshua (658 verses)
    1. Joshua chapter 1 (18 verses) - Joshua's troops prepare to conquer Canaan. Any who refuse to carry out orders will be killed
    2. Joshua chapter 2 (24 verses) - Joshua sends two spies to Jericho; Rahab protects the spies; men of Jericho searched for spies; spies return safely to Israel

    12. Joshua chapter 12 (24 verses) - Israel defeated the kings east of the Jordan under Moses and the kings west of the Jordan under Joshua. Thirty-one kings in total.
    13. Joshua chapter 13 (33 verses) - Joshua is old; much land remains to be conquered; territories defined for Reuben, Gad & half of Manasseh; Levi inherits no land
